How to recover deleted data from your iPhone

You accidentally deleted an important file from your iPhone, panicked, and hit the web looking for a way to get it back. Instantly, you’re hit with a barrage of search results pushing “iPhone data recovery” software. If you look closely, you’ll notice almost all of these apps are low-quality rebrands or slightly tweaked forks of just a handful of identical tools.

Before you pull out your credit card, you need to understand what can actually be recovered from an iPhone, and what is gone for good.

Why deleted means deleted

If a file is truly deleted in iOS, it cannot be recovered. Period. iOS uses file-based encryption. This means every single file on your device is encrypted with its own unique, mathematical key. The moment you delete a file, the operating system instantly destroys that specific encryption key. Even if the raw data is technically still sitting on the flash storage chip, it’s completely unreadable. If someone desoldered the storage chip to read it directly (a process called NAND imaging), all they would get is a garbled mess of encrypted data.

On top of that, the iPhone’s storage controller runs background processes like TRIM and garbage collection, which physically clear out unused blocks of data. The operating system handles all of this automatically in the background, and there is absolutely no bypassing it.

So what can be recovered?

If true recovery is impossible, how do these apps stay in business? They simply look for files that haven’t actually been deleted yet. There are a few specific categories where this happens:

  • Photos and Videos: When you delete a photo, iOS just moves it to the “Recently Deleted” album for 30 days. It’s still there. You can go into the Photos app and hit “Recover” yourself for free.
  • Deleted Mail: Obviously, look in your email provider’s trash bin first. Otherwise not really recoverable on the iPhone.
  • Messages: Sometimes you can pull back a deleted text message. iOS stores messages in a database format (SQLite). When you delete a text, the database doesn’t immediately overwrite the data; it just marks that space as available for future use. Until the operating system performs a routine maintenance cleanup (a process called “vacuuming”), the text fragments often stick around.
  • Notes: These use the same database structure as messages, so fragments of recently deleted text can sometimes survive until the database is vacuumed by the system.

How “data recovery” apps actually work

There is no voodoo happening under the hood. When you plug your phone into your computer and run one of these recovery tools, the app simply talks to the iPhone’s built-in backup service and forces it to create a standard, local backup. Once the backup is done, the software parses through it, digs out the databases and the “Recently Deleted” folders, and presents those files back to you. They don’t do anything you couldn’t do by just making a free local backup yourself and looking through it.

The iCloud loophole

The one major exception to the rule is iCloud. If you delete a file from your phone, there is a chance the deletion hasn’t synced to Apple’s servers yet.

  • iCloud Data Sync: Things like contacts, notes, and photos sync rapidly. However, if your phone happened to be offline when you deleted the file, the cloud copy might still be intact.
  • iCloud Backups: Cloud backups are slow, so Apple handles them strictly. Your iPhone will generally only push an iCloud backup once a day, and only when the device is plugged into a charger, connected to a known Wi-Fi network, and has its screen locked. If your phone backed up last night and you deleted a file this morning, that file is still safe inside last night’s iCloud backup.

If you suspect your missing data is sitting in iCloud, you don’t necessarily need a spare Apple device to restore the backup and check. What the forensic crowd digs up

There is a persistent belief that law enforcement has magic boxes that undo any deletion. That is not entirely false, but it is badly exaggerated. No tool brings back a file whose encryption key is gone. What specialists actually do is different: instead of recovering the file, they go looking for the traces the system left elsewhere, and quite often the answer is not the file itself but a record saying “something was here on this date”.

Nearly all of this requires a full file system extraction, which in turn needs a supported device, a working exploit, and a paid toolkit. This is well outside what you can do at home, and outside the scope of this article. But it is worth knowing what those traces are, if only to understand what “deleted” really means on your phone.

  • Notifications. iOS keeps a database of push notifications so it can show them on the lock screen and in Notification Center. If an app puts message text in the preview, that text lands in the database, decrypted, regardless of what the app itself does with the original. This is exactly what happened in the Prairieland case earlier this year: the FBI recovered incoming Signal messages from a suspect’s iPhone after Signal had been uninstalled, with the disappearing-message timer long expired. Nothing was broken; the messages were sitting in Apple’s own notification storage. Apple treated the retention as a bug and fixed it in iOS 26.4.2 in April 2026, and Signal says the leftovers get wiped once you install the patch. Turning off message previews prevents the content from being stored in the first place.
  • Photo metadata and thumbnails. The photo library keeps its own database (Photos.sqlite) with a record for every asset: file name, capture date, dimensions, geolocation, which album it lived in, whether it was edited. Records for deleted assets can linger there, and separately, thumbnails under the PhotoData folder sometimes outlive the originals. A small preview of a photo is not the photo, but it is often enough to establish that a particular image existed on that phone at a particular time.
  • System databases. Since iOS 14, Apple has been logging a great deal of user activity into the Biome subsystem, which feeds Siri suggestions and similar features. These files are stored in a proprietary format, and researchers keep finding message fragments in them, including text from messages that no longer exist in the Messages database. Similar leftovers turn up in other system stores that track what apps were doing and when.
  • App caches. Apps that render web content, and plenty that do not, cache what they load. The cache is not cleaned up when a chat is deleted, because nothing connects the two. This is only reachable with a full file system extraction, since local backups do not include app cache folders.
  • Logs. The system keeps diagnostic logs that record activity rather than content: an app sending data at a certain moment, network traffic, a process starting. No messages there, but the timeline is sometimes the point.

None of this is recovery in the sense you want when you delete a holiday photo by accident. It is reconstruction from leftovers, it is patchy, and what survives depends on the iOS version, the app, and how long ago it happened.
