There is a whole industry selling software to protect data: full-disk encryption, rights management, key servers, the works. Almost none of it lives in an ordinary home or a two-person office. At home people protect a file the way the application in front of them allows. They type a password into WinRAR, or into Word, or into a PDF, and move on with the day. Here is the thing: none of those applications is a security product. WinRAR is a compression tool, Word is a word processor, Acrobat is a document viewer. They just happen to carry enough encryption to be used as a lock, and that is exactly why people use them. It is right there, it is free, and it needs no IT department.
The three formats this comes up in are the everyday three: archives, office documents, and PDF files. We make a tool for each.
Before picking a tool, it helps to know that “password protected” covers two different situations that are nowhere near equally hard to undo.
The first is a password to open. The file is encrypted; without the correct password the content is scrambled and unreadable. There is no way around the encryption itself. Either you supply the password, or the software looks for it by trying candidates, which is what people mean by “recovering” a password.
The second is a password to act, sometimes called a permissions or restrictions password. Here the file opens and reads fine, but it will not let you print it, edit it, or copy text out. This lock is enforced by the reading application, not by strong encryption, so it usually comes off at once. PDF and Microsoft Office both use this two-tier system. Archives do not; an archive password is always a password to open, and always real encryption.
When an open-password has to be found, there are two honest routes. A dictionary attack tries words and common variations, betting a human chose something pronounceable. A brute-force attack tries every combination in order, which is the last resort and slows down quickly as passwords get longer. In all three tools you can narrow the search with anything you still remember: the length, whether there were digits, the first character. Every scrap helps, and sometimes it helps a great deal. Short, simple passwords fall fast; long random ones may not fall at all, and that is true of every tool of this kind, not only ours.

Current archives are encrypted with AES, the same standard governments use, and against AES there is no clever trick; the tool works through a dictionary and then brute force, sped up by whatever you can recall about the password. This is the plain limitation of protecting a file with a passphrase you then forget, and it is worth being clear-eyed about it rather than promising magic.

If your problem is the restriction kind, a document you can open but not edit, or a worksheet locked against changes, this is quick; those permissions passwords come off more or less instantly. That is the dull case, and in my experience it is also the most common one. People protect a sheet, forget they did it, and come back a year later locked out of their own work.
If the file will not open at all, that is the open-password, and modern Office uses strong encryption, so the only route is an attack. This is where a graphics card earns its place. With multiple video cards the tool runs up to 200 times faster than a CPU on its own, using AMD or NVIDIA boards, current generations included. A decent GPU is the difference between a search that finishes and one that does not.
Advanced PDF Password Recovery splits the same way. By far the most common PDF complaint is a file you can open and read but cannot print, copy from, or edit. Removing those restrictions is instant, and if that is your whole problem you are done in seconds.
If the file will not open at all, you are into an attack again: dictionary and brute force, with masks and rules to trim the search. For documents using the strongest 256-bit AES, the tool can put an NVIDIA GPU and multiple cores to work. One limit to know up front: it cannot touch PDFs locked by DRM systems or third-party plug-ins such as FileOpen. Those are a different mechanism, and no password recovery tool will help you there.

Everything above is cleanup. The way to avoid needing it is a password manager, and it is worth a paragraph because it is the one piece of real security software built for ordinary people rather than corporations.
A password manager stores all your passwords behind a single master password, so you can use a long random one for every file and account without having to carry any of them in your head. Used properly, it means you never forget a document password again, because you never memorized it in the first place; you looked it up. That is a better answer to “what do I do when I forget” than any recovery tool, ours included, and I would rather you used one.
There is a catch, of course. You have moved all your eggs into a single basket, so the master password becomes the thing you cannot afford to lose. Pick a manager with a sensible account-recovery story, turn on whatever second factor it offers, and treat that one master password with the care you were not giving the dozen you replaced. Do that, and the three tools above become something you read about once and never had to buy.
